The Oral History of The Tunnel

24 August 2012

I am proud to say that I was lucky enough to witness one of these Mecca nights in 1995, and it was the best Party ever. Being the only white dude in that club, having to take off my shoes and going through the metal detector, smoking blunts with rowdy thugs and ghetto hoodrats, bumpin and grindin with bitches that all looked like Total in a Bad Boy video, getting down to the LOUDEST tunnel bangers until the breakadawn and then, to top it all off, not getting a cab to take me back over the Brooklyn Bridge to where I was staying… It was definitely more than a night to remember, a priceless hiphop highlight.

Now here is more for all my “stuck in the 90′s” ninjas. Check out this great piece about these legendary Sunday Night Hip Hop Parties told by some of the people responsible for the epic most go-to parties back in the day.

NY 77 Coolest Year in The Bronx

19 August 2012

1977, NYC; Pimps and prostitution, Summer of Sam, 25hour Blackout, B-Boys, Graffiti and The Burning Bronx… Check out this 2hour documentary as it reveals never-before-seen footage and untold stories about the creation of our culture

features interviews with those who lived it, including Ed Koch, Geraldo Rivera, Jimmy Breslin, Gloria Gaynor, Afrika Bambaataa, Chris Stein (Blondie), Richard Hell, KRS-One, Grandmaster Caz, DJ Disco Wiz, Legs McNeil, Annie Sprinkle, Al Goldstein, Tommy Ramone, Jellybean Benitez, Lee Quinones, and many more.

the documentary is told chronologically and weaves together the stories of the emergence of hip hop, punk and disco, graffiti art, and sexual liberation. In the background are the major political events and social issues of the day — crime, urban decay, financial woes, the infamous blackout, drugs, Son of Sam, the bitter mayoral election and the overall poverty that gripped the city.

Out of chaos came creation. From the South Bronx came hip hop. From the Lower East Side, the thrashing guitars of punk. And all over the city, a disco revolution was underway. Elaborate, finely crafted graffiti art decorated the subway cars and break-dancers shimmied in the streets. The sexual revolution was in full swing. In January 1977, most of this activity existed in its own underground bubble. Yet by the end of the year this artistic expression was on its way to mainstream America, and would be with us for generations to come.

Documentary: Once Upon A Time in New York – The Birth of Hip Hop, Disco & Punk (2007)

16 May 2012

BBC Four documentary about a New York City vastly different from the one today. Beginning in the late ’60s, this 60-minute film focuses on the three musical genres that greatly impacted music as a whole: punk rock, disco and hip-hop. From Warhol’s Factory to CBGB, from disco haven The Gallery to Studio 54, and from park jams in the South Bronx to worldwide domination, the doc traces the humble origins and interconnecting elements of the musical styles that were born out of necessity and contains interviews with various key players in the development of the art forms. Musicians like Richard Hell of Television, Chris Stein of Blondie, David Johansen and Syl Sylvain of the New York Dolls, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, Tommy Ramone of the Ramones, and John Cale of Velvet Underground discuss the punk scene while Nile Rodgers and David Mancuso take on disco’s popularity and how it went from a subculture to a phenomenon. The last part is dedicated to hip-hop, featuring commentary from Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Fab 5 Freddy, who explains how Blondie came to record their smash hit, “Rapture.” Check out the doc after the break…
