The Rise And Fall Of The Clash (2012). A new documentary directed by Danny Garcia and co-produced by David Mingay (Rude Boy) and Robin Banks, that tells the inside story on the collapse of one of the most influential bands of the 77 UK explosion… Made for release on DVD and to selected TV networks worldwide, The Rise And Fall Of The Clash features previously unseen footage of the band at work and at play, interviews with the individual band members and with those who knew them well, and traces the downward trajectory of a band who were at one point “the biggest band in the world”.
This is not a film that pulls any punches, but neither does it overlook the life-changing effect that The Clash brought to so many. Over 90 minutes it paints the fascinating inside story of rival, treachery and betrayal, and the internal band dynamics and managerial interferance that ultimately led The Clash to self-destruct.
Picture the summer of 2011 filled with summer league pandemonium, who’s the first person that comes to mind? Kevin Durant, without a question. His flawless skills and passion for the game are visible with every alley-oop, off the board dunk, step back, crossover, and trey-ball, which at times had the range that would stretch out to half court. Durant’s consecutive long-range bull’s-eye shots were awe worthy, and kept every person in the crowd on their feet. There is a reason he has had back to back to back NBA scoring titles, and the summer of 2011 made that crystal clear.
BBC Four documentary about a New York City vastly different from the one today. Beginning in the late ’60s, this 60-minute film focuses on the three musical genres that greatly impacted music as a whole: punk rock, disco and hip-hop. From Warhol’s Factory to CBGB, from disco haven The Gallery to Studio 54, and from park jams in the South Bronx to worldwide domination, the doc traces the humble origins and interconnecting elements of the musical styles that were born out of necessity and contains interviews with various key players in the development of the art forms. Musicians like Richard Hell of Television, Chris Stein of Blondie, David Johansen and Syl Sylvain of the New York Dolls, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, Tommy Ramone of the Ramones, and John Cale of Velvet Underground discuss the punk scene while Nile Rodgers and David Mancuso take on disco’s popularity and how it went from a subculture to a phenomenon. The last part is dedicated to hip-hop, featuring commentary from Public Enemy’s Chuck D, Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Fab 5 Freddy, who explains how Blondie came to record their smash hit, “Rapture.” Check out the doc after the break…
